Google AI, ChatGPT and Perplexity Visibility for SA Businesses

A Johannesburg financial services client asked us in June why they appeared in Google’s AI Overview for their core service but ChatGPT had never heard of them. The answer surprised them: the two systems barely share a citation pipeline.

Businesses searching for a “google ai visibility company” or a “perplexity visibility provider” are usually working from the assumption that AI search is one thing you optimise once. It is three things, and they reward different work. This post explains how each platform picks its sources, which one matters most for your kind of business, and when a single provider can genuinely cover all three.

AI visibility isn't one thing. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity each source their answers differently.

The Three Platforms Retrieve Sources Differently

Google AI Overviews cite from Google’s index and lean on classic ranking signals. ChatGPT retrieves substantially through Bing and weighs brand mentions heavily. Perplexity runs its own crawler and cites sources on every answer. Optimising for one does not automatically move the other two.

That single paragraph explains most of the confusion in this market. A business with strong Google rankings inherits a head start in AI Overviews, none in ChatGPT, and only a partial one in Perplexity. It also explains why “AI visibility” audits that only test one platform mislead you; we cover the full method in what an AI search visibility audit covers.

The shared foundation across all three: accessible content (no blocked AI crawlers), self-contained answer passages, consistent entity signals, and independent brand mentions. Do that foundation once and each platform then needs its own layer on top.

Google AI Overviews: Where SA Rankings Still Count

If your business already ranks on page one in South Africa, AI Overviews is the platform where you have the most inherited advantage. Google states in its documentation on AI features in Search that there is no special markup to appear in AI Overviews: the systems draw on standard Search signals.

That has two practical consequences for SA businesses. First, your existing SEO investment carries over. Pages that rank for “retirement annuity advice South Africa” are the candidate pool for the AI Overview on that query. Second, the passage matters more than the page. Google quotes the section that answers the question directly, so a ranking page written in long unstructured prose can still lose the citation to a lower-ranking page with a clean, quotable answer block.

The platform-specific layer here is structural: question-shaped H2s, direct first-sentence answers, and clean schema. Our schema cheatsheet for SA local businesses covers the markup side.

ChatGPT: The Bing Index and the Mention Economy

ChatGPT is the platform least connected to your Google rankings, which is why SA businesses dominant on Google are often invisible in it. Its live retrieval draws heavily on Bing’s index, and its willingness to name a business tracks the independent mentions it finds: reviews, directories, forums, press.

Most SA businesses have never verified their site in Bing Webmaster Tools, never claimed Bing Places, and have a Hellopeter profile they last looked at in 2023. For ChatGPT, those neglected assets matter more than another blog post. The month-to-month work is different enough that we wrote it up separately in what ChatGPT visibility optimisation involves.

One more SA-specific reality: ChatGPT’s training data and retrieval sources skew international, so it defaults to global or generic answers unless SA-specific sources exist for it to quote. Publishing content that is unmistakably South African, ZAR pricing, provincial specifics, local regulation like POPIA and FAIS, gives it something local to cite. Generic content gets outcompeted by international sites with more authority.

Perplexity: The Citation-First Engine

Perplexity cites its sources on every answer, which makes it the most winnable platform for a well-structured smaller site. Its own crawler, PerplexityBot, must be able to reach you, and its answers visibly reward pages that state facts cleanly with numbers and dates.

Searches like “perplexity visibility optimisation providers in johannesburg” have started appearing in SA, which tells us buyers are beginning to treat it as its own channel. Sensible, with caveats. Perplexity’s SA user base is smaller than ChatGPT’s, but its users skew professional and research-heavy: exactly the people comparing service providers before a purchase. For B2B firms in Johannesburg and Cape Town, a Perplexity citation often sits closer to the buying decision than a Google click.

The platform-specific layer: confirm PerplexityBot is not blocked, keep facts dated and attributable, and check Perplexity’s publisher guidance for how it surfaces sources. Then test it monthly with the same buyer questions you use for ChatGPT.

Which Platform Matters for Your Business Type

Local service businesses should weight Google AI Overviews first, B2B and professional services should weight ChatGPT and Perplexity, and e-commerce sits in between. Budget follows the platform your buyers actually ask.

A rough SA guide from the client work we see. A plumber or dental practice in Roodepoort lives and dies on Google: AI Overviews and the local pack are the battleground, and ChatGPT referrals are still marginal for walk-in trade. A Sandton consultancy or fund manager is the opposite: their buyers ask ChatGPT for shortlists and verify on Perplexity, so a Google-only strategy misses the referrals that matter. An online store selling nationally needs the foundation everywhere plus product-level citability, because shopping questions now get answered on all three platforms.

None of this requires a “google ai visibility company” and a separate “perplexity provider”. It requires one provider that measures each platform separately and can show you the differences in your own numbers.

How to Measure Your Own Position Before Paying Anyone

You can baseline your own AI visibility in an afternoon, free, and you should do it before any provider conversation. Write down the ten questions your best customers would ask, in their words, not yours. Run each through ChatGPT, Perplexity and a Google search that triggers an AI Overview. Record three things per answer: who gets named, who gets cited as a source, and how your business is described if it appears at all.

The spreadsheet that exercise produces is worth more than most proposals you will receive. It shows you which platform already knows you, which competitor owns which question, and whether your problem is absence (you never appear) or misrepresentation (you appear with outdated services or the wrong positioning, which is common for SA businesses that rebranded or changed focus). It also arms you for provider meetings: anyone you interview should be able to explain the why behind each result in that spreadsheet, line by line.

Can One Provider Cover All Three Platforms?

Yes, if they measure each platform separately and their method shows it. The foundation work overlaps heavily; the measurement and the final optimisation layer do not.

The test is simple. Ask a prospective provider for last month’s answer sets, per platform, for one of their clients. Three distinct sets of recorded answers means real multi-platform work. One generic “AI visibility score” means one platform tested and three invoiced. Our playbook for getting cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews shows the level of platform-specific detail the work actually demands.

What This Means For You

  • Test all three platforms this week with your top three buyer questions, and record who each one names.
  • Weight your budget by platform: Google AI Overviews for local trade, ChatGPT and Perplexity for B2B and professional services.
  • Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and check that GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are not blocked.
  • Publish unmistakably South African content: ZAR figures, provincial detail, local regulation. It is what the platforms can cite for SA queries.
  • Demand per-platform answer sets from any provider claiming to cover all three.
